Peter Antevy Responds to the New PALS Guidelines

The physiology of cardiac arrest relies greatly on pressure mechanics for optimal flow through the heart, brain and lungs, and overzealous ventilation is detrimental in these situations.
The recently released PALS resuscitation guidelines now recommend an increase to 20-30 breaths per minute in pediatric cardiac arrest management, a significant change from the earlier 10 bpm recommendation.
In Part 1 of this PALS 2020 Review, Peter Antevy, MD, discusses the controversial ventilation rate change to the guidelines and asserts that the physiologic consequences are concerning, as the change was based on a small patient observational study.
