Kan. Man Steals Ambulance, Gets Shot by Police
July 30—A man "behaving erratically" led Chanute police on a chase in stolen ambulance, authorities said.
The situation began Saturday with a disturbance in the Walmart parking lot. When police arrived around 1:20 p.m., they found Trevor L. Jones, 38, who was behaving oddly, and called Emergency Medical Services to evaluate him, according to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which will conduct an independent investigation.
About 2 p.m., EMS personnel were "communicating with the subject" when he jumped inside the ambulance, locked the doors and stole the vehicle. In response, one officer fired "several times" toward Jones and the departing ambulance, according to the release.
Officers chased the ambulance for about 15 minutes until they stopped it near W. 7th St. and S. Allen Ave, about two and a half miles away, the KBI said. There officers found him with a gunshot wound.
Officers detained Jones and paramedics treated him for his injuries, which included the non-life threatening gunshot wound. KBI said he was first taken to a local hospital and then a Wichita hospital for further treatment.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The KBI will conduct an independent investigation on the incident. After their investigation, the findings will be given to the Neosho County Attorney for review.
