Former Tenn. Paramedic Pleads Guilty to Drug Theft from His Agency
June 08—A former emergency services supervisor accused of stealing drugs from the Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services and altering records to cover up the thefts pleaded guilty in Criminal Court and will face a sentencing hearing in August.
Randy Lee Davidson, 47, Kanapolis Dr., pleaded guilty to official misconduct, forgery and two counts of theft of less than $1,000 in connection with the incident. He faces one to six years in prison, split sentence or supervised probation and fines up to $3,000 on the official misconduct and forgery charges.
Davidson faces a total of $2,000 in fines and two 11-month and 29-day sentences on the theft charges.
He was arrested on a sealed grand jury indictment following a joint investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee State Comptroller's Office and the District Attorney's Office.
Investigation revealed that Davidson stole 36 vials of opioid pain reliever fentanyl and 43 vials of morphine from January 2015 through August 2016. Davidson was also accused of falsifying more than 50 controlled substance administration documents to make it appear the drugs were legitimately used by other paramedics.
Davidson was employed with Cumberland County EMS from Sept. 16, 1994, until Aug. 15, 2016, when he resigned. During that time he served as a paramedic, supervisor and trainer.
Davidson, who is believed to be a first time offender, has announced through his attorney, Assistant Public Defender Ellie Putman, he plans to apply for judicial diversion. It was stressed during the plea hearing that at no time were any patients endangered by Davidson's actions.
