W. Va. County to Host Emergency Preparedness Fair
May 11--The second annual Raleigh County Emergency Preparedness Fair will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza.
This event, organized by the Southern West Virginia Preparedness Partnership and the Local Emergency Planning Committee, will feature vendors and activities dealing with emergency preparedness.
"We cannot stop natural disasters, but we need to remember when disaster strikes, the time to prepare has passed," said Ann Worley, a member of the Southern Preparedness Partnership.
"This event is important for people to learn about how to prepare and take steps to keep themselves and their family safe in the event of a disaster."
Made possible from grants from the Beckley Area Foundation and Wal-Mart, the Emergency Preparedness Fair will help kick-off the Rhododendron Festival and will be held in conjunction with Beckley Events' Sweet Treats.
Participants include Appalachian Power, Red Cross, ServePro, Beckley Fire Department, Beckley Police Department, Raleigh County 911, Jan Care, United Way, Sam's, Raleigh County Commission on Aging, Best Ambulance, New River Travel Council and Amateur Radio Emergency Services.
The Beckley Fire Department will have the Fire House set up and the Beckley Police Department will again feature their Mobile Crime Scene Lab. Drug dog demonstrations will also be presented.
A highlight last year was the distribution of Grab & Go Cinch Bags containing basic preparedness items. This year, 250 bags will be distributed with even more preparedness items, including can openers, first aid kits, flashlights, gloves, duct tape, hand sanitizer, trash bags, chapstick, and other pertinent pieces. Raleigh County 911 has also donated blankets.
