Paramedic, Driver Injured in S.C. Ambulance Crash
Dec. 21--A paramedic and another person were injured Tuesday night in a head-on crash between a car an an ambulance in Anderson County.
The crash happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Dobbins Bridge Road near Meljo Drive, according to electronic records from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Greg Shore, the owner of Medshore Ambulance Service, said he was notified of the crash because it involved one of his company's ambulances. Shore said he was told that the ambulance was traveling on Dobbins Bridge Road when a car pulled out of a side road and hit the ambulance head-on. Shore said the paramedic crew was headed back to Williford fire station, which is on S.C. 187, where the ambulance is based.
Shore said paramedic Kimberly Brewer suffered a chest injury that is not believed to be life-threatening. He said another paramedic in the front of the ambulance was not injured.
Another person who was not a patient was in the back of the ambulance and was also uninjured, Shore said. That person is what is known as an "explorer," Shore said. That term is typically used for high school students who have expressed interest in becoming paramedics and are riding along on calls, Shore said. The person's name was not available Tuesday night.
The driver of the car in the crash suffered a leg injury, Shore said. That person's name was also unavailable.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol was still investigating the crash late Tuesday night.
