Harford firefighters warn of solicitation scam

Bryna Zumer

Sept. 09--Harford County fire officials are warning residents about a possible scam, with a caller claiming to represent firefighters.

The Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association posted on Facebook that they have been made aware of "phone solicitations being made to the citizens in our county from an entity called the 'Firefighters Support Foundation.'"

"It is important to reiterate to each and every citizen in Harford County that the volunteer fire and EMS companies/departments in this county do not utilize telemarketing or other third party services, groups or foundations to gather donations or funding for them," according to the Facebook post.

Fire and EMS organizations in Harford County do not call anyone and will not visit anyone's home or business to ask for money, according to the post.

The Association is asking anyone who gets such a call or visit to notify their local fire or EMS company so they can follow up.

Spokesperson Rich Gardiner explained the association was told about the solicitation by a firefighter in Aberdeen who reported such a phone call, leading the association to worry there could be other calls being made.

The association Facebook post notes: "Your hard earned money is just that, hard earned, and you deserve to know when questionable issues arise involving those you trust."
