N.C. Firefighter`s Body to be Escorted Along Interstate
June 08--The body of a firefighter who died while searching Lake Norman for a missing swimmer will be escorted back to Conover from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem Wednesday morning.
The closed procession will include the family of fire Capt. Bradley Long and vehicles from the State Highway Patrol, Newton Fire Department, Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue, Catawba County EMS and the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
Long, 28, a volunteer captain at Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue and a full-time firefighter for the city of Newton, died Monday trying to recover the swimmer's body in deep, murky water near the Marshall Steam Station.
The procession is scheduled to leave Tri-City Baptist Church in Conover at 8:30 a.m. for BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, where the vehicles will stage for the trip back.
The procession from Winston-Salem will follow I-40 West to Exit 132 in Conover and then to Tri-City Baptist Church, 1409 North N.C. 16. Bennett's body will then be escorted to Bennett Funeral Service, 502 First Ave. South in Conover.
Fire departments that wish to show their respects during the processional will set up on bridges over the route.
Officials launch investigation into diver's death at Lake Norman
Karyn Yaussy, Catawba County emergency management coordinator, said she expected the investigation into Long's death by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office to be a lengthy one.
