BRIEF: Firefighters safely lift worker out from under 80,000-pound truck
March 15--A worker changing a tire on an 80,000-pound truck in Roslindale miraculously cheated death after he was trapped underneath.
"The person was in the process of changing the tire when something slipped and trapped him underneath," Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said. "We initiated a technical response, but one of the challenges we faced is we're told the tank was full and the weight was around 80,000 pounds. The firefighters worked to safely get him out. They had to lift the truck enough to get him out."
The delicate technical rescue got underway shortly after 11:30 a.m.
MacDonald said the tire-changer "was conscious the whole time" throughout his 30-minute rescue ordeal and even called out, "Thanks, guys," before he was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital to be checked out.
The truck vacuums out sewer drains. The victim, MacDonald said, was not the truck's driver, but a man who was called in specifically to change the tire.
"For our purposes, it was a successful rescue and great team work between fire, EMS and Boston police," MacDonald said.
