S.C. Ambulance Stolen With Paramedic Inside

Jan. 06--A man discharged from the AnMed Health Medical Center emergency room tried this morning to steal an ambulance with a paramedic in the back and two others hanging on the door and the front grill, said Greg Shore.

Shore, who owns Medshore Ambulance Service, said the ambulance never left the parking lot, hitting a curb before it could get out.

The paramedic in the back managed to get through a divider into the front of the ambulance, holding the driver's head against a window and putting the ambulance into park, said Shore, who is also Anderson County coroner.

"We dodged a bullet of total disaster," he said.

The man was arrested and still was being processed at 10:15 a.m., said Capt. Kevin Warren of the Anderson Police Department.

The ambulance was dropping off a cardiac arrest patient when it was stolen.

As the vehicle was stolen, a firefighter grabbed onto the door, and an ambulance supervisor grabbed onto the front grill, Shore said.

The paramedic and the firefighter received minor injuries, he said.

The ambulance suffered only minor damage.

"We're fortunate no one was seriously hurt, the ambulance isn't a big deal but our people are," Shore said. "Someone could have been hit by the ambulance. We're really fortunate."
