Maine City Renews Contract With American Ambulance

Oct. 11--BERWICK, Maine -- American Ambulance of New England (AANE) will continue to be the emergency medical response provider for Berwick for at least another four years.

The Board of Selectmen, at their regular meeting Tuesday, approved a contract renewal that is for four years with an option for an additional four.

There is no cost to the town for the service. Revenue for the company is generated through direct billing to insurance companies and other services they provide.

American Ambulance Deputy Chief Scott Schuler said American Ambulance will continue to service Berwick's emergency needs at no cost to the town for up to another 8 years.

"Our ability to provide high quality 911 services to the community at no cost is not only a win for AANE, it's a win for the town," Schuler said. "The tax dollars required to fund a system remotely close to the expertise and performance provided today would be significant."

Schuler said too often towns like Berwick have to pay a great deal for emergency response service.

"Unfortunately small towns with little volume often have to pay big money to receive the high quality service we provide to Berwick," Schuler said. "The fact we are able to do it for free there is a big win to the community so they expend finances elsewhere."

Schuler said the company wants to thank the town for trusting it two years ago and looks forward to seeing the dollars saved by the town put toward other needed services.

American also provides emergency medical response for Kittery and for Somersworth, N.H. Somersworth also recently renewed their contract.
