Wisc. Fire Department Recognized for Dog Rescue
Aug. 11--TOWN OF BELOIT -- An animal rights group is giving the Town of Beloit Fire Department a Compassionate Fire Department Award after firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire Aug. 2.
Residents of the house, 1506 Jackson St., Beloit, arrived during the fire and informed first responders that the dog was locked in a kennel inside. Three firefighters then rushed in to retrieve him, according to a news release from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA.
The firefighters also gave the dog oxygen.
"Thanks to these courageous firefighters, this dog was spared a painful, terrifying death," PETA Senior Director Colleen O'Brien said. "PETA hopes their determination will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need."
Fire Chief Gene Wright said the incident was fairly routine, but he said the dog would have died if it had not been rescued.
PETA encourages animal owners to put signs on their doors or windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs, cats and or other animals.
The Town of Beloit Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a box of vegan cookies and a copy of "The Engine 2 Diet," a Texas firefighter's 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
