Emergency Physician Steven Stack Named President of AMA

Washington — The following is a statement from Michael Gerardi, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

“The American College of Emergency Physicians congratulates our esteemed colleague, Dr. Steve Stack, on his inauguration as president of the American Medical Association (AMA).  Dr. Stack is the first emergency physician to lead the AMA and its youngest president in 160 years.  Even as a very young physician, Steve demonstrated his interest in leadership by joining the board of the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA) and went a step further by acting as the EMRA representative to ACEP’s Board of Directors from 1998 to 2000.

Dr. Stack embodies all that is best about emergency medicine: staying cool under pressure, problem-solving, teamwork and the spirit of innovation.  His career – already distinguished by governance roles in both emergency medicine and the house of medicine as a whole – offers a shining example to us all of how to blend leadership with hands-on work in the emergency department, which he continues to do.  Dr. Stack’s experiences as an emergency physician have kept him connected to the wide variety of patients who seek help every day in our nation’s emergency departments, giving him a unique and invaluable perspective on our 21st century health care system.

We are very proud of Steve Stack’s inauguration as president of America’s largest physician organization and look forward to the great things we know he will accomplish in this new role.”

Board-certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Stack currently practices in Lexington and surrounding central Kentucky. He is the youngest AMA president since 1854.

Dr. Stack has served as medical director of multiple emergency departments, including St. Joseph East (Lexington), St. Joseph Mt. Sterling (rural eastern Kentucky) and Baptist Memorial Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). He is the first emergency medicine board-certified physician to serve on the AMA Board of Trustees (BOT).

Dr. Stack has special expertise in health information technology (IT) and has led multiple AMA efforts in this area. He has been a member of numerous federal advisory committees for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), including the Health IT Safety Center Task Force, the Health IT Implementation, Usability and Safety workgroup, the Information Exchange workgroup, the PCAST Report workgroup, and the Strategic Plan workgroup. A member of its board of directors since 2011, Dr. Stack has also served the past three years as the secretary of eHealth Initiative, a non-profit association committed to improving health care through the advancement of health IT.

Additionally, Dr. Stack has made notable contributions to the areas of physician licensure, regulation and assessment. He has served as chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) Maintenance of Licensure (MOL) Implementation Group and as a member of its predecessor, the MOL Advisory Group. He has also contributed in 2014 as a member of the FSMB Special Committee on Strategic Positioning; a role similar to his prior participation on FSMB's 2008–2009 Strategic Repositioning Task Force.
