Oct. 16--Members of the Thomasville Police Department and Davidson County EMS responded to a report of an accident at 7:01 p.m., said Brandon Mabe, shift supervisor with Davidson County 911. Once on the scene, first responders confirmed to telecommunicators that two vehicles were involved in the accident on Baptist Children's Home Road near Lake Road.

Lt. Michael White of Davidson County EMS confirmed a total of six patients were transported to WFBMC. The lieutenant said a passenger vehicle and a SUV were involved. Two of the patients -- the driver and front-seat passenger of the SUV -- were airlifted by medical helicopters and three other passengers in the SUV were transported byambulance. White said the sixth patient was the driver of the passenger vehicle.

White said two of the patients were pinned inside of the vehicle. He said the two transported by AirCare sustained serious injuries that are possibly life-threatening. The four others suffered mild-to-moderate injuries that are likely not life-threatening, the lieutenant said.

White said he had no names available of those involved as of Wednesday evening. He said there was heavy damage to the front of both vehicles and both vehicles are totaled.

A reconstruction accident unit from the TPD was on the scene due to the crash being such a serious accident, White said. He said police were "trying to get all the particulars in order."

A tweet from the TPD's Twitter account stated officers were investigating a head-on collision. Police urged motorists to avoid the area.

"Investigation is in the early stages," TPD Lt. Brad Saintsing tweeted Wednesday night. "TPD will issue a media release Thursday morning."

Thomasville Fire Battalion Chief Robbie Binkley said officials were hoping to reopen Baptist Children's Home Road from Johnsontown Road to Optimist Park Drive by 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. He said about 9:30 p.m. that both cars were still on the scene as officers were conducting their investigation.

Binkley said firefighters extricated two patients, the driver and male passenger of a Toyota SUV. He explained a toddler and a young child also were injured in the SUV.

"It was a pretty bad wreck," Binkley said, adding it took about 15 minutes to get the two people free who were pinned inside the SUV. He explained an Audi sedan was the other vehicle involved and said speed appeared to be a factor.

Binkley said the accident occurred in the same spot where 19-year-old Aaron Scott Bean died in an April crash. The battalion chief said there are flowers near the accident that serve as a memorial to Bean.

Davidson County EMS and Thomasville Police were assisted by the Thomasville Rescue Squad, Thomasville Fire Department and Fair Grove Fire Department. White said Fair Grove firefighters were called to assist in setting up the landing zone for the helicopters. The landing zone was set up at the ball field at Optimist Park.
