Mich. Townships Discuss Ambulance Services Proposal
Oct. 07--TRAVERSE CITY -- Officials from two Antrim County townships will discuss a contentious ambulance services contract during a special board meeting on Wednesday.
Elk Rapids and Milton townships trustees will meet at 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Government Center to go over a draft contract from Mount Pleasant-based Mobile Medical Response, Inc.
Township officials are considering outsourcing ambulances services to the group, a proposal that has drawn stiff opposition from a citizens committee.
Elk Rapids Township Supervisor Bill White said he doesn't expect board members to vote on the draft contract during Wednesday's meeting.
"We have a regular meeting next week," White said. "If we're going to vote on it, we'd do it a regular meeting."
White, Elk Rapids Township Treasurer Michael Szymanski and Trustee Dorance Amos face recall election on Nov. 4 after Concerned Citizens Committee members circulated recall petitions in protest to the outsourcing proposal.
Committee Secretary Jim Braun said many township residents will be upset if trustees approve the contract before the recall votes.
"It would seem to me only logical and fair to let this issue be decided by the people on November 4," he said.
White said township officials are taking a "business-as-usual" approach to the proposed contract.
