Calif. Boy Falls Through Skylight at School

March 24--The third-grade student who fell through a skylight at Hamilton Elementary School over the weekend remained in the intensive care unit of an Oakland hospital on Monday, a spokeswoman said.

William Wells was in stable condition at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, said spokeswoman Melinda Krigel. The boy's mother, Michelle Melgoza, said he had seven spinal fractures and head trauma, KTVU reported.

The boy had gone up to the roof at the elementary school to retrieve a ball that landed there during a game of basketball with his friends, Novato Unified School District spokeswoman Leslie Benjamin said.

Three Hamilton students, including William, found their way through a locked garden fence, took a ladder from the garden shed and climbed onto the school's roof around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Benjamin said. William fell through a domed skylight onto the cement pathway 10 to 12 feet below.

Melgoza took him to Novato Community Hospital, where a Novato paramedic crew decided to transport him to Oakland for trauma treatment, police said Sunday.
