West Virginia Mine Roof Collapse Kills 1, Hurts 2
March 09--One person was killed and two injured in a mine roof collapse just outside Cameron in Marshall County, W.Va., authorities said.
The collapse occurred at the Cameron Portal of a Murray Energy coal mine between 9 and 9:15 p.m. Sunday, said Mike Mucheck, deputy director of the Marshall County Office of Emergency Management.
There were initially reports of miners trapped, but all were eventually accounted for, Mucheck said. It was unknown whether the fatally injured miner was dead at the scene or succumbed to his injuries later, he said. His name has not been released.
Mucheck said one injured miner was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown; the other was transported by ambulance to Medical Park in Wheeling.
He said Murray Energy of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and the West Virginia Mine Safety and Health Administration would investigate. Murray purchased the mine from Consol Energy Inc. as part of a $3.5 billion deal in 2013.
