Maine Officers Resuscitate Man During Traffic Stop
July 29--A man who suffered a heart attack during a traffic stop in Kennebunk and had to be revived by police officers is recovering at Southern Maine Healthcare in Biddeford.
Kennebunk Police officer Matthew Harrington stopped a vehicle just before 7 p.m. Saturday on Fletcher Street. He approached the unidentified male operator and asked for his license and registration.
When the officer returned to his cruiser to run a check, he heard a female passenger screaming for help, according to a press release provided by Kennebunk police.
Harrington returned and found the driver unresponsive. He immediately requested emergency assistance and backup and then started CPR.
Within one minute, Officer Michael Tucci arrived armed with an automatic external defibrillator (AED). The officers used the device to shock the man once and he regained a pulse, according to police.
Kennebunk Chief Bob MacKenzie praised his officers' efforts, particularly Harrington, who used his training as an emergency medical technician to save the man's life.
