Philadelphia Township Police to Fete Hero Officers, Citizens
June 09--Radnor Township Police will be honoring officers, firefighters, paramedics and others on Monday night, including a policeman who was part of the team that escorted a terminally ill 3-year-old boy from Philadelphia International Airport to his home.
And the ceremony at the township building will include a dash of humor.
Platoon 4 officers will receive machetes to commemorate the safe arrest on May 1 of a Radnor man who, police said, was high on LSD and swinging two machetes while walking near a popular park.
They also will be recognized for the arrest of a male juvenile arsonist who was at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur.
Officers Alex Janoski and Folcroft Borough Officer Dan White will be acknowledged for pulling together a police escort for a 3-year-old Springfield Township boy who was returning from a Make A Wish vacation at Disney World. The family of Braydon Chandler, who died in March, will be on hand to present the award, as will the Make A Wish Foundation.
Lifeguard Mattock Callahan and township resident Matthew Leeper will be recognized for their successful rescue of a 12-year-old girl from the bottom of an apartment pool.
Others involved in the rescue were James Delaney, Joseph Maguire, Michael Maguire, Ryan Maguire, David Panetta, Andrew Ventura, and Brian Zimmerman.
The girl, who needed CPR after being pulled from the water, was released from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and is doing well, according to police.
At the township's Memorial Day Parade, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics revived a 68-year-old military veteran who had collapsed and was unresponsive. They administered CPR and other advanced life support and transported the victim to Bryn Mawr Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
The department will recognize citizens who contributed more than $60,000 to help start up a K-9 program.
Those that contributed to the K-9 program include Dr. Len Donato, Robert Archibald, Brian and Debbie Lurie, Gene and Angelia Mitchell, Nora Liu, VIST Bank, John Braxton and Braxton Animal Works, Chase Ressler and Family, Michael Smyth and Land Rover of the Main Line, Harford Dog Park Association, Pet Value, Wentz Family, Ernie Deeb, and the Philadelphia Police K9 Instructors.
The ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m.
