7 Shot Overnight at Chicago Coin Laundry

June 03--Seven people have been shot tonight including a 14-year-old at a coin laundry on the South Side, Chicago Fire officials said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said an EMS Plan I, which automatically sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was called about 8:20 p.m. for a shooting in the 7900 block of South Marquette Avenue.

Many of the victims were "laid out" on the floor of the coin laundry in the 2600 block of East 79th Street, said Langford. The laundry's glass window was shattered and police are running around trying to interview people, said Langford.

"Most of" the shooting happened at the laundry, said Langford.

The 14-year-old victim was taken in serious to critical condition to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, said Langford, who said most of the victims were "young adults."

Langford said one person was taken in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, two victims who were in fair to serious condition were taken to South Shore Hospital, one was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition, and one was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The seventh victim was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in fair to serious condition, Langford said.

Earlier, five people were wounded during afternoon and evening attacks, including a 15-year-old boy, authorities said.

Most recently in the 2500 block of North Lawndale Avenue at 7:45 p.m. a 22-year-old man was shot in his side and critically wounded, said Police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Sweeney said. Further details were not available about the shooting, which happened in the city's Logan Square neighborhood.

Earlier, paramedics were called to the 8000 block of South Avalon Avenue at 4:18 p.m. for a separate shooting that wounded two people, fire officials said. A 15-year-old boy was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and a 21-year-old man was also taken to Christ, but was in good condition, according to Chicago Fire Department officials.

In two earlier shootings, a pair of men were wounded during separate attacks one minute apart and about five blocks away from each other this afternoon in the West Woodlawn neighborhood, police said.

The first occurred at 12:10 p.m. when someone shot a 21-year-old man multiple times in the 700 block of East 62nd Street, according to Police News Affairs Officer Ana Pacheco.

The victim was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where his condition had stabilized, said Pacheco.

In a separate incident one minute later, someone shot a 22-year-old man in the buttocks in the 6400 block of South Eberhart Avenue, Pacheco said.

The 22-year-old victim was standing in the street when he "heard shots and felt pain,'' said Pacheco. He was also taken to Stroger where his condition had stabilized, she said.

No one is in custody for the shootings that happened one minute apart, but Area Central detectives are investigating.
