N.C. Responders Save Teen Trapped in Mud
March 06--A Kannapolis teen is recovering Thursday after being rescued from mud that had trapped him up to his waist late Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities said Kannapolis firefighters were called about 5:30 p.m. to the 1400 block of West A Street. They found a 14-year-old male trapped in mud at the bottom of a ravine.
Friends told firefighters that the group had been crossing the undeveloped property, taking a shortcut to another neighborhood. They said the 14-year-old walked down the hill and toward a pool of standing water.
The friends told firefighters they advised the 14-year-old not to go near the water, but the teen quickly became stuck in the mud, eventually sinking to his chest.
Firefighters needed nearly 30 minutes to pull the teen from the mud. He was taken by Rowan County EMS to CMC-Northeast for treatment from possible hypothermia.
Maria Bostian, a spokeswoman for the Kannapolis Fire Department, said the incident serves as a reminder for parents to urge children to stay away from construction areas.
