Md. Kindergartners Taken to Hospital After Handling Syringe on Playground
Oct. 25--Seven Rippling Woods Elementary kindergartners were taken to a hospital for evaluation after finding a syringe on the Glen Burnie school's playground Thursday afternoon.
Anne Arundel County Police and firefighters were called to the school at 530 Nolfield Drive at 12:15 p.m. after a student found the needle and then several others passed it around.
A teaching assistant became aware of the incident and took three students initially thought to be the only students involved to the office. There it was learned that four others students also had handled the needle.
The students were taken to the school's health room. School administrators called their parents and 911.
None of the students had visible wounds, but all were taken to the hospital as a precaution, principal Michael Powell wrote in a letter to parents. Two of the students were taken to a hospital by their parents; the five others were taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center by ambulance.
All seven students were back in school Friday morning, county schools spokesman Bob Mosier said via email.
School custodians searched the playground looking for any dangerous items on Thursday.
School administrators planned on speaking with students on Friday to remind them not to pick up dangerous items and to immediately notify an adult if they come across one, Powell wrote.
