Calif. Grandma Driving Scooter With Grandson on Her Lap Hits Pedestrian
FREMONT -- An elderly woman on a motorized scooter with her 5-year-old grandson on her lap hit and injured a pedestrian outside a local school this week, police said.
Officers were called at 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday to Steven Millard Elementary School at 5200 Valpey Park Avenue for a report of a pedestrian that had been hit by a scooter, said police Spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
Witnesses told police a 76-year-old woman driving a Rascal motorized scooter struck a 48-year-old woman with the scooter in the quad area of the school.
Police learned that the woman's 5-year-old grandson jumped on her lap and accidentally hit the scooter's throttle, causing it to lurch forward and hit the woman.
The 48-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital to be treated for pain in her ankle and foot, Bosques said.
No charges are pending as the crash was determined to be an accident, police said.
