Texas Ambulance Joyride Cut Short by Police

Mark D. Wilson

Oct. 10--SAN ANTONIO -- A man who allegedly stole an ambulance on the Northeast Side Wednesday made it nearly four miles before San Antonio police abruptly ended his joyride.

Paramedics treating a patient around 11:15 a.m. inside a motel on the 1400 block of Austin Highway heard their ambulance rolling away outside and immediately notified dispatch, San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove said.

All SAFD units are equipped with GPS tracking systems, which allowed the department to track the ambulance.

San Antonio police officers recovered the vehicle and apprehended a suspect near Josephine and Broadway. It's not clear if an arrest was made and charges filed.

All medication onboard was locked and no drugs were stolen.

The report on the incident was requested from San Antonio police but no further details were available from the agency.

The man's name wasn't available.
