Ariz. Sheriff`s Vehicle Strikes, Kills 10-Year-Old Boy
July 16--A 10-year-old boy died after being struck by a Pima County Sheriff's Department deputy driving an SUV on Tucson's south side Monday.
The boy was treated by paramedics at the scene at South Campbell Avenue and East Wyoming Street shortly before 5 p.m., said Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
The child was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center, Baker said. He died Monday night at the hospital.
At 4:45 p.m., a sheriff's deputy reported to sheriff's communications that he struck a child while driving, and needed medical assistance, said Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
Deputy Jesus Verduzco was driving a marked Tahoe north on Campbell south of Irvington Road en-route to a call for service about a civil matter. When "he approached the intersection of Wyoming and Irvington, a 10-year old boy ran across the street and tragically, the deputy was unable to avoid striking him," according to a press release on the Sheriff Department's Facebook page.
Tucson police are heading the traffic investigation because the incident took place within city limits. The sheriff's department will handle the administrative investigation to determine whether the deputy followed proper standards and procedures.
