Crews Clear California Acid Spill
June 29--Emergency crews spent much of the day and into Saturday night mopping up a hazardous materials spill in Windsor involving about 5,000 gallons of a solution that is 33 percent muriatic acid and sulfuric acid.
The rest of the solution is water, officials said.
The spill, which was first reported at about 9:25 a.m., occurred at Nor-Cal Metal Stripping at 10010 Old Redwood Highway. One of the tanks containing the solution somehow ruptured, said Windsor Fire Captain Dean Crothers.
The tanks are large enough to submerge an entire auto body, he said. The solution spilled both inside the building and outside the dirt grounds, Crothers said, adding that the spill was contained.
Crothers said the incident did not warrant the evacuation of nearby residences. The rear of the property abuts Highway 101.
"It's the kind of thing that when you handle it, you put on rubber gloves," he said, adding that there's no danger to the public.
The county hazmat team, the county public health department and officials with the state emergency management agency responded.
Officials said the solution did not get into any waterways and was contained along the north fence line of the property, near Highway 101. The Redcom official said none of the material has entered Windsor town property.
