S.C. Man Uses Smartphone Siren App to Rush Friend to Hospital
May 28--ROCK HILL -- A York man who claimed he was leading a friend to the hospital was arrested in Rock Hill after authorities say he used a police siren application on his smartphone to intimidate drivers and circumvent traffic early Tuesday.
Shortly after midnight, police officers parked at a Herlong Avenue gas station saw and heard a 2001 Ford Mustang blare an audible police siren and flash car emergency lights to "get other vehicles" out of the way, according to a Rock Hill police report.
Officers followed the car as it sped down Herlong Avenue, exceeding at least 80 mph, the report states. The driver pulled up closely behind another car, forcing the other driver to yield as the car pull into Piedmont Medical Center.
Police stopped the car and spoke with the driver, Bradley Martin, 22, who initially told officers he that he didn't use a siren but was leading his friend to the hospital. His friend, he told police, suffered from an injury to his foot, and followed behind Martin in his own car.
Police questioned Martin about the siren twice before he said he was using a police siren app on his Android smartphone, which he plugged into his car stereo through an auxiliary port so it played over the car's speakers, the report states.
Police arrested Martin and charged him with reckless driving and unlawful use of a siren.
