Indianapolis EMS to Host McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day

Indianapolis, May 7, 2013 – Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will host the first annual McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day in memory of Private Tim McCormick and Specialist Cody Medley, two service members who were killed in the line of duty in February.

The free event will be held Wednesday, May 22, during National EMS Week, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Indianapolis City Market. It will take the form of a fair, with booths representing divisions of public safety and partner organizations, as well as a memorial booth for McCormick and Medley.

“We’ve chosen to honor our fallen brothers during one of the most celebrated weeks on our service’s calendar,” said Dr. Charles Miramonti, chief of Indianapolis EMS. “We hope that this inaugural event will help remind the public to be aware of those who risk their lives daily to keep our community safe.”

McCormick, an emergency medical technician (EMT), and Medley, a paramedic, died from injuries sustained after a car collided with their ambulance at an intersection in downtown Indianapolis on February 16. The McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day is designed to foster public interaction with the goal of better educating the community on what public safety is and to be aware of the public safety personnel around them.

The fair will include public safety and health-related activities, ambulance tours and giveaways. The event will also coincide with the Original Farmers’ Market at the Indianapolis City Market, so visitors can stop for lunch as they take in the fair. Visitors are also encouraged to bring donations of gently used books to benefit Indy Reads Books.

The McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day will take place during National EMS Week, May 19-25. National EMS Week was first celebrated in 1974, when President Gerald Ford declared it at the request of the director of the Division of Emergency Medical Services, David R. Boyd. The week has since been celebrated by hospitals, fire departments, emergency medical services and others; and it provides a time to thank those who save lives and make the community a better place.

Indianapolis EMS was formed in 2010 as a partnership between the City of Indianapolis, Indiana University School of Medicine and Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, with Wishard as the supervising hospital. Indianapolis EMS operates as a division of the Department of Public Safety and was formed via unification of Wishard and Indianapolis Fire Department EMS services. The service benefits from medical leadership in quality, education, training and research from the IU School of Medicine.
