Utah 3-Year-Old Dies After Getting Neck Tangled
April 08--FARR WEST -- A 3-year-old girl has succumbed to injuries sustained in a swing set accident at her home in Farr West.
The girl, whose name was not released, died Saturday afternoon at Primary Children's Medical Center In Salt Lake City, Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther said.
The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the backyard of the girl's home on Remuda Drive, Lowther said.
The girl had been playing alone for less than five minutes when her father discovered her neck tangled in a swing set rope, he said.
Emergency personnel transported her to Primary Children's Medical Center and where she was initially classified in critical condition.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Division investigated 40 deaths associated with playground equipment from 2001 to 2008, the latest statistics available.
There were 27 deaths from hangings or other asphyxiations, including 12 associated with slides and nine on swings.
The average age of the hanging victims was a little older than 5 years, and the oldest was 11 years, the CPSD found.
