Final Salute Given For S.C. EMT Killed in Wreck
Oct. 05--Emergency Medical Technician Jonathan Cory Brown of Cheraw was behind the wheel for Sandhill Medical Services during the ambulance crash Sept. 25 in Monroe, N.C., that killed his co-worker, Belinda Gale Rivers, according to police. Rivers was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and Brown was transported to Carolinas Medical Center -- Main in Charlotte.
Three days later, according to Monroe Police Chief Debra Duncan, Brown was issued a criminal summons for Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle.
"Witness accounts and evidence show that the ambulance entered the intersection at Venus and Highway 74," said Duncan, "while the stoplight was emitting a steady red light."
Brown is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 6, in Union County, N.C. The incident also involved a tractor-trailer truck, but the truck driver was not injured. There was no patient on board the ambulance at the time of the accident.
Rivers, 43, was buried the afternoon of Sept. 27 at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery in Ruby. A line of rescue vehicles, from counties near and far, gathered at Miller-Rivers-Calder Funeral Home in Chesterfield that day and drove in procession to Cross Roads Baptist Church.
River's casket was draped with a United States flag. Her co-workers, from Sandhills Medical Services, served as pallbearers.
