Pregnant Pa. Woman Killed by Lightning Strike

July 24--GARRETT, Pa. -- A 36-year-old woman who was nine months pregnant was killed Tuesday when she was struck by lightning in an outside area in the 2600 block of Rockdale Road in Summit Township, according to the Somerset County 911 Center.

Mary H. Yoder, of Summit Township, was in the woods picking berries with her husband and their two children when the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. as severe thunderstorms passed through the region.

Pennsylvania State Trooper J.S. Drzal reported that Yoder took shelter from the rain under a pine tree while her husband and two children took shelter under a nearby pine tree.

A few minutes later, Yoder was struck by lightning, killing her and her unborn child at the scene, police said.

An investigation by Pennsylvania State Police is continuing.

Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller, Meyersdale Ambulance and Garrett Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
