Muddy Angels Pedal into Maryland
MOUNT AIRY, MD -- After a morning of pedaling up hills in Maryland, the Muddy Angels took a well-deserved lunch break at the Mount Airy Vol. Fire Department on Friday.
The riders were achy, tired and sweaty.
Members of the MAVFC cheered as they struggled to get up the last hill beside the fire station.
The riders and "wingmen" were treated to subs, courtesy of N.Y. J&P Pizza and Subs, a local restaurant.
"They've graciously donated the food the last few years," said Steve Lichtman, a Maryland paramedic, who coordinated the stop.
The exhausted riders walked around the parking lot, sprawled in the grass and sat on the curbs while taking advantage of the break.
"It's almost over now," one rider called to another offering encouragement.
Larry Black, who owns Mount Airy Bicycles, was very busy greasing chains, adjusting brakes and making other repairs for the Muddy Angels.
"It's a great cause," he said as he was leaving. "I'm glad to have helped out. I wish I could have done more to support this..."
Even though they were beyond tired, the bicyclists pedaled off after about a 45 minute break knowing the end -- Alexandria, Va. was coming this afternoon.
