Man Critical After Jumping Out of Vegas Ambulance

March 22--A 31-year-old Las Vegas man is in critical condition Wednesday after jumping from the back of an ambulance and being struck by a passing truck, Metro Police said.

Metro spokesman Bill Cassell said the incident happened at 12:35 p.m. on Buffalo Drive, north of Peace Way in Spring Valley.

Police say Steven Datu, a patient in the ambulance, jumped from the back of the vehicle and ran across southbound and northbound lanes before colliding with a GMC truck towing a trailer driven by Fred Tucker, 32, of St. George, Utah.

Datu hit the rear side of the truck then fell under the trailer as it was traveling northbound on Buffalo, police said.

It's unclear why Datu jumped from the ambulance. He ultimately was transported to University Medical Center's trauma unit, Cassell said.

Tucker was uninjured, police said. The collision remains under investigation by Metro's accident investigation section.
