Conn. Motorist Hits Six Cars, Found in Cardiac Arrest

William Kaempffer

Jan. 27--NEW HAVEN -- A seven-car accident that spanned two blocks near the Hospital of Saint Raphael may have been precipitated by a medical condition of one of the motorists.

"He wasn't going fast but he veered and stuck that car," said Rich Bernardo, who was working with a friend at The Curbside Cafe food stand in front of the hospital. "He looked dazed but then he drove off very slowly."

"From the look on his face it looks like something was wrong," he said.

His co-worker Derek Flagge said it didn't appear the man was trying to flee the scene.

"He didn't seem to rush," he said. "We thought he nodded off."

Lt. Raymond Hassett said authorities were investigating whether the motorist suffered a medical emergency, possibly a heart attack. Fire Capt. William Gould said the motorist was in cardiac arrest when firefighters arrived.

He was taken to the hospital. Police were monitoring his condition but no updates were available.

Hassett said the man struck two occupied vehicles in front of the hospital on Chapel Street and proceeded through Sherman Avenue before striking at least four more parked cars. The crash came in at 12:54 p.m.
