UK Ambulance Staff Set For Deal on Breaks

The Scotsman

A LONG-running dispute over ambulance staff meal breaks is close to being resolved.

The news emerged last night after a fifth day of intense negotiations between union chiefs, and Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) and Scottish Government officials.

Currently, ambulance crews take unpaid rest breaks, during which the control room does not contact them, bringing them into conflict with SAS management.

But Harry Donaldson, Scottish secretary of the GMB union, confirmed the issue had been "thrashed out" and negotiations had reached a point where there could be a resolution of the dispute.

He said he would be meeting the 50 GMB stewards in Glasgow today to discuss the details of a possible deal.

An announcement is due to be made by the Scottish Government tomorrow.
