Seven Hurt, Including Baby, in Allentown, Pa., Crash
Nov. 19--Seven people were injured when a sport utility vehicle and a car collided Friday night at a downtown Allentown intersection.
The car was westbound on Linden Street at 8:55 p.m. when it was T-boned by an SUV driving north on Eighth Street. Five people were trapped in the crumpled car and had to be extricated by city firefighters, police said.
"We have accident investigators coming out to the scene," city police Capt. Dean Schwartz said. "It's going to be a detailed investigation."
A young woman, who a medic said was the car driver, appeared distraught as a boy, a girl and a 2-year-old baby were removed from the car and placed in ambulances. Their conditions were not available Friday night, but police said the baby may have a skull fracture.
Police were looking into which of the two vehicles ran a red light and how fast each vehicle was going. Officers also shut off traffic to the intersection.
Two people were injured in the SUV, which had significant front-end damage. The left side of the car was crushed. A van also was involved in the accident, but was only slightly damaged.
Firefighters spread sand over fluids that streamed from the wrecked vehicles.
Schwartz said five of the injured were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, and two others went to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg.
