Night Rescue Saves Injured Hiker in Colorado

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo.

 

A woman who fell while hiking Sunday evening was rescued in the dark on a trail near Aspen.

The 36-year-old woman from Florida was hiking the Ute Trail with a friend when she fell and was hurt, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office.

The woman's hiking companion was able to call for help on a cellphone.

Rescue personnel from Mountain Rescue Aspen searched for the hikers in the dark and determined the victim would have to be carried out because of her injuries and hypothermia.

Rescuers arrived with the woman at the trailhead at 10 p.m.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Ute Trail is described as a grueling uphill hike with a knee-splintering downhill descent on Aspen.com. The extremely steep trail switchbacks through knotty pines, mountain chutes and loose rocks that may crumble without cautious footing.
