New York EMT Suffers Heart Attack Following Shift
West Islip, N.Y. EMT Edward Mueller suffered a fatal heart attack on Feb. 2 within 24 hours of responding to his last alarm, according to Safety Officer Richard Naeder.
The 50-year-old EMT was driving an ambulance responding to a car fire call at approximately at 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 1. After returning home that night, Mueller awoke at 2 a.m. and told his wife that he wasn't feeling well.
While visiting his daughter at the State University of New York College at Oneonta later that day, he suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 p.m., according to Naeder.
Mueller joined the all-volunteer department of just over 150 members as an EMT in 2004 and responded to well over 500 calls per year.
"He will be sorely missed," Naeder said. "He would bend over backwards for anyone in the department."
