Attack on Virginia Firefighter/Medic Probed
ACCOMACK, Va. -- The Accomack County Department of Public Safety is conducting an internal investigation into a Feb. 4 incident in which a career firemedic, or firefighter/emergency medical technician, was assaulted while answering a call for assistance.
Public Safety Director Jason Loftus said Monday the investigation will be complete by March 1 and will result in a document detailing lessons learned about how to better handle similar cases.
The investigation was triggered after a paid medic stationed at Oak Hall Rescue responded at about 5:30 p.m. to a person with altered mental status at a residence on the 3370 block of Hillcrest Drive in New Church. When the medic, who Loftus did not identify, arrived and began treatment, the patient allegedly assaulted the medic, Loftus said.
The medic was transported to Shore Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for injuries and released later that day. The injured employee remains out on leave, but is expected to return by the end of the week, Loftus said.
Virginia State Police charged Orville Brown, 38, at the scene with assault on a firefighter, a felony, Sgt. A. G. Warren said Monday. Brown remains incarcerated in the Accomack County jail without bond.
