New York Subway Severs Man`s Legs
12/26/2003
An uptown No. 3 train lopped off a man's legs last night when it ran him over at the 110th Street and Lenox Avenue station in Harlem, officials said.
The unidentified man was lying on the northbound track near the middle of the station at about 6:45 p.m. when the train rounded the curved platform and hit him, severing his legs, according to Transit Authority spokesman James Anyansi.
The motorman saw the man and hit the emergency brake, but the first car still ran over him, officials said.
Emergency workers said the man was conscious as he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital. His condition late last night was unknown.
After the train had been cleared, blood and about $3 in change remained on the tracks where the man was hit. Transit officials speculated he might have been trying to get the change. Police sources, however, said the man was drunk.
