One Dead In Crash Of Tupelo, Mississippi Hospital Helicopter

RIPLEY, Miss. (AP) -- One person was killed in the crash of a medical helicopter from the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tippah County.

The victim was identified as the pilot of the air ambulance. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Tippah County authorities said the wreckage was found Thursday. The location was not immediately released.

Authorities said the helicopter was sent from the Tupelo hospital to Tippah County on Wednesday night to pick up an individual injured in a traffic accident.

Authorities said the flight crew noticed a problem with the helicopter. The patient and two members of the flight crew returned to Tupelo in an ambulance.

The pilot remained with the helicopter until a mechanic arrived to make repairs, authorities said. The helicopter took off shortly after 11 p.m., but never returned to the medical center.
