Virginia Paramedic Pronounces Woman Dead, Alive

DAVE STATTER
First she was dead. Then she wasn't. And a paramedic is in trouble.

Police called for someone to take away the body of an Alexandria Woman. That's when the woman moved.

The woman is very much alive and she's telling her story only to 9 News.

Just like Mark Twain, the reports of Cegurna Thomas's death were greatly exaggerated.

"They call me the holy woman because I read a lot of the scriptures from the Bible", brags the 56-year old Thomas.

Thomas suffers from asthma, congestive heart failure and other problems.

"I have a lot of things wrong with me", she says.

Thomas was told she was found unconscious with a bible by her side just before 10 a.m. on February 4th.

City officials confirm Alexandria Police along with the fire department's paramedic unit responded and came to Thomas's home.

Sources familiar with the case confirm that medics thought Thomas was dead and they left, leaving the body with police.

The sources also tell us that as the police officers worked the phones to have someone pick up Thomas's remains one officer saw her eyelid move. Another saw her breathe.

One of those officers is himself a medic. The fire department medics after being gone for the better part of 15 minutes returned. Thomas was taken to Alexandria hospital where she was pronounced alive.

Alexandria City spokeswoman Barbara Gordon tells 9 News, the city is taking this case very seriously and wants to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

City officials will not talk specifics about this case or the disciplinary process, but a number of sources say termination procedures are underway for one of the medics involved in the treatment of Cegurna Thomas.
