Rescue Squad Mourns Member Slain at Virginia Tech

SUSAN NICOL KYLE

SMITHFIELD, Va. -- The Isle of Wight Rescue Squad lost a member last week in the deadly massacre at Virginia Tech.

Nicole White, 20, a volunteer EMT, was remembered as a friendly girl, who enjoyed being part of her community.

"She came in as a junior member during high school, and got her EMT. She was very active while she was here," said Chief Brian Carroll. "Nicole was involved in a lot of things around town."

Carroll and other members joined about 1,000 others Wednesday to say so long to the young volunteer whose life was robbed by a gunman. An international studies student, White would stop by the station for duty when she was home on breaks.

"It's such a tragedy what happened at Virginia Tech," the chief said.

According to an article in the local Daily Press, White's family imagines that the 20-year-old was helping someone even in her last moments. When she was found, she was clutching another student's ID, and emergency responders are trained to find information about someone they're trying to help.

White will be remembered for her smile and outgoing personality.

The rescue company with about 50 members handles about 2,500 calls annually.
