9 Dead, 86 Injured in Turkish Airlines Crash
The plane crashed short of a runway in Amsterdam Wednesday morning, smashing into three pieces and reportedly spraying luggage and debris across a muddy field.
Despite the catastrophic impact only nine of 134 people aboard were killed. Of the injured survivors, six were in critical condition, 25 were seriously hurt and 24 had slight injuries as of Thursday. Also see Experts: Many Air Crashes Now Survivable.
7 Wounded by Gunfire on Mardi Gras Parade Route
Seven people, including a toddler, were injured in an apparently random shooting spree during Fat Tuesday festivities in New Orleans. While some terrified revelers ducked and the parade came to a halt, others reportedly continued to vie for beads.
The 20-month-old child was not seriously injured. The two most seriously injured victims underwent surgery for stomach wounds, while the others were listed in stable condition Tuesday night with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Summit: Be Ready for Radiological Threats
Dr. Jeffrey Runge, who recently stepped down as the nation's first chief medical officer of the Department of Homeland Security, addressed the 2009 Radiological Threat Summit in Washington, D.C. Wednesday.

Va. Firefighter/Paramedic Invited to President's Address
Lynchburg, Va. firefighter-paramedic Abbey Meacham was teaching a class Tuesday when she got a phone call. The first lady of the United States was requesting her presence.
General president of the IAFF Harold Schaitberger called her and explained that Michelle Obama was looking for an active firefighter, preferably female, to sit with her during the President's address to Congress. Click for more on this EMSResponder.com story.

Free Hazmat Safety Training Video Now Available
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), under a cooperative agreement with the DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), developed a companion training video to enhance the use of the Emergency Response Guidebook 2008 (ERG2008).
The purpose of this training video is to explain the contents of the ERG2008 and how to use it as a resource in the event of a hazardous materials transportation incident.

"There is a misconception and debate surrounding this topic," writes EMS health expert Bryan Fass. "Researchers, Physical Therapists, Trainers and coaches all love to debate/argue over this topic.
