Amtrak Train Hits Farm Vehicle, Derails Near Colo. Border
DENVER --
An Amtrak train hit a farm vehicle and derailed in Nebraska, near the Colorado and Kansas border.
Amtrak Spokesman Marc Magliari says an agricultural vehicle was obstructing the BNSF tracks near Max, Neb. The California Zephyr hit the vehicle and derailed around 8:50 a.m. Friday. Max is about 40 miles from the Colorado border and 200 miles from Denver.
Both of the train's locomotives left the rails, along with three railcars. The remainder of the train remains upright and inline, Amtrak officials say.
The train was carrying an estimated 178 passengers and the train's crew.
There are no reports of life-threatening injuries, however, several passengers were taken to a local hospital, Amtrak officials say.
The rest of the passengers are being taken to nearby a high school.
The California Zephyr left California on Wednesday. It traveled through Denver to Nebraska.
