FORT CARSON, Colo. --

A medic from Fort Carson will be honored with the Bronze Star for helping save lives, despite her own injuries during an attack in Afghanistan.

Cpl. Helen Ruhl, a 4th Infantry Division Soldier, will receive the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Wednesday for exceptionally valorous actions while under enemy fire.

Ruhl is a combat medic.

Her convoy came under attack in eastern Afghanistan on Sept. 24, 2009. Despite being wounded, Ruhl applied tourniquets to an injured comrade, examined her team, and supervised the application of life-saving medical treatment while laying down suppressive fire, according to a news release from Fort Carson.

Ruhl was medically evacuated to the U.S. and spent several months recovering at Brooke Army Medical hospital at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
