Snake Bite Sends Tenn. Child to Hospital

LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. --

A 5-year-old girl was rushed to a hospital by helicopter Sunday after a copperhead snake bit her foot at a Lawrenceburg campground.

The snake, which a fellow camper killed, bit Jancin Brewner at David Crockett State Park. Jancin was given an anti-venom in an ambulance and was flown to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where her parents finally got to her. She had been at the park with her grandfather.

Snake experts said the hot weather means snakes are moving around less during the heat of the day and more at dawn and dusk. Experts said a copperhead's bite is not lethal and that the best way to avoid a bite is to wear shoes.

The Nashville Zoo said people in areas where snakes could be should watch where they step or put their hands. They said snakes will usually retreat if a person takes a few steps back.
