ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP, Pa. --

Police were trying to figure out who set off a bug spray bomb in an apartment building in Elizabeth Township that sickened a woman and four young children Thursday night.

The Elizabeth Township Fire Chief said someone at the Surrey Lane apartment building set off a bug spray bomb in a hallway. Shortly after, tenants began complaining of breathing problems.

Police said they believe this was a prank gone wrong.

"I was thinking who could have done this because it wasn't funny; it was supposed to be done as a joke," said resident Kaela Dudek.

Four children under the age of 12 were checked out by medics at the scene, but were OK.

One woman was taken to UPMC McKeesport Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters tested the air inside the apartment units when they arrived. They ventilated all neighboring apartments and re-tested levels to make sure they were safe.

All residents were allowed back inside.
