Friday Clickbait, Sept. 7
Welcome to EMS World’s newest online feature, Friday Clickbait. This feature will regularly collect interesting, educational, outrageous, and other noteworthy EMS-related material from the worlds of media and social media for some light, fun end-of-week reading.
Facebook—Most Commented Post
It was a busy week on Facebook, with multiple posts drawing dozens of comments, but the most discussed and shared by far was Hillsborough Promotes Firefighter to Paramedic Without Checking Credentials (Sept. 2).
Coming in second was the post for September’s EMS World Magazine cover story, Bringing Them Home: U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Evacuation (Sept. 1).
The week’s top comment, however, came from yesterday’s reader poll, Should EMS Personnel and Firefighters Be Expected to Wear Ballistic Gear?
Twitter—Most Popular Tweet
The week’s top tweet also came from the September print issue: It was our August 31 team editorial denouncing racism in the emergency services.

Despite recently graduating from medical school, Reynolds Kairus, MD, continues to run calls as a paramedic. Here he walks viewers through a Day in the Life of a New York City Paramedic.
‘Attaboy’ of the Week
Palm Coast firefighter-paramedic Julie Rivera and volunteer intern Brandon Davis were recognized for outstanding service by the Columbian Club of Florida’s Flagler County during the club’s Tribute to First Responders.
Rivera, a firefighter with the Palm Coast Fire Department since 2015, was selected for excellence in service and her involvement in her department’s infrastructure programs, such as its information technology and communications teams.
Davis served with the Palm Coast Volunteer Fire Department a decade ago, then left to start a family before returning as an EMT in 2013 and as a volunteer intern firefighter in 2017. He rejoined the Palm Coast Fire Volunteers last September with a goal of becoming a career firefighter and is scheduled to be the next volunteer-intern hired as part of the department’s intern program.
What Were You Thinking?
A former captain with the Peoria (Ill.) Fire Department has been sentenced to probation for taking $2,100 from the department’s credit union.
The felony could have sent Joe Camp, 45, to prison for up to five years. Instead Camp’s lack of criminal history meant 30 months of probation and repayment of the $2,119 taken.
Camp served on the credit union’s board of directors and occasionally worked as a teller (the credit union is located at the central firehouse). When members authorized the withdrawal of funds from their personal accounts for a union charity fund, Camp diverted the money to his own account.
