IRCP Webinar Focuses on Immersive Technology Training

Lucas Wimmer

On Monday, January 18, The International Roundtable on Community Paramedicine hosted another episode in their webinar series. “Immersive Simulation Within Paramedic Education” was presented by Duncan McConnell, paramedicine program director at the Griffith University School of Medicine in Queensland, Australia.

In this webinar, the main objective was to teach listeners about the benefits and availability of virtual and augmented reality systems that can be used for fully immersive training. McConnell also provides information on different programs that already use said technology.

Eleven key points were discussed:

  • The development of simulation-based learning in prehospital care, including the advancement of virtual reality and training manikins over time.
  • Examining how patient safety can be improved by using immersive simulation by looking at studies that touched on the topic.
  • Using augmented reality situational training to improve care for rural organizations when transporting patients a long distance.
  • Taking advantage of all the new, cost-effective technology to promote more event-driven training for paid and volunteer staff.
  • Examine training scenarios in the UK and Australia, including the Daden Limited and Paramedic Assessment Systems in the UK and Ambulance Victoria and CAE Professional Services training scenarios in Australia, which hones skills in multi-casualty incidents and triage.
  • Discuss the benefits of the virtual pharmacy training provided at the Griffith University School of Pharmacy, including virtual prescribing and virtual dispensing.
  • Examine the inner workings and the breadth of topics that can be trained with virtual reality training with manikins in medical settings.
  • Discuss the opportunities for virtual reality situations that intensify paramedic training, including virtual canvases through Oculus Rift virtual reality glasses that are based inside ambulances or inside a home.
  • Review Griffith University’s development of the Immersive Ambulance Project, which provides a virtual ambulance module for students to train.
  • Provide ways to keep purchasing of technology and simulation cost-effective.
  • Project the future of virtual reality training in paramedic education.
