C-Mac Pocket Monitor from KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc.
As I made my way around the exhibit hall doing the interviews and evaluations that would cull the list of the Top 30 Products down to the final list of the Top 20, I couldn’t help but notice that the product I was going to see at the KARL STORZ booth was lying submerged in a bowl of water, where it remained for three days. I think that’s pretty remarkable since it is a laryngoscope with a video monitor.
As evidenced by the extended dunk time, close examination reveals the outstanding machining and craftsmanship that went into the C-MAC® Pocket Monitor from KARL STORZ.
I must admit that it took me a few minutes to get the feel for operation, since it’s much different than using a traditional laryngoscope handle and blade. That being said, once I got a little muscle-motor memory going for me, I was amazed at how well the C-MAC performed. The optics on the 2.4" video screen were outstanding, even in the fluorescent world of the exhibit hall. The screen itself pivots in two planes, making it easier for you to see what you need to see to safely and effectively intubate your patient. And when it is time to put the C-MAC away, the video screen folds flat against the handle for easy, compact storage.
The C-MAC utilizes lithium-ion battery technology that provides an impressive hour of continuous use before needing resurrection in the charger. You get six blade choices for the C-MAC: Mac 2, 3 and 4; Miller 0 and 1; and a Dorges blade, aka the “D” blade for exceptionally anterior patients.
Another real plus is the limited work you need to do when it’s time to disinfect the C-MAC. A mere 8-minute soak and you are good to go! Bottom line as I see it: the C-MAC Pocket Monitor is a must have on any ALS rig.
